Why is InfoNet for me? PDF  | Print |
Pavel Jajtner   | 18.09.2011 | European Affairs - Articles [en]

Anyone wanting to ‘do Europe’ well will be on the best path in the InfoNet team. Teamwork and meeting people with the most diverse cultural and historical heritages is very inspiring and enriching. It is important for everyone not just to take, but also to give. InfoNet makes this possible.

InfoNet’s main subject is lifelong learning. In the century of knowledge and information technology, in the century of globalisation, in an environment of sustained conflict of interests and values, this is a subject which is necessary for everyone who wants to live actively and age more slowly.

Norbert Wiener*: ‘Living actively means living with sufficient information.’

Team

I only became a correspondent for the Czech Republic this year. Even after these few months, my experiences and findings have been quite positive. I became a member of a big team which represents at least three generations from the great majority of the countries in Europe. Here, there are professional journalists from whom we can learn the trade because they are glad to unselfishly share their experience. There are people here who have pursued the most varied of professions in their lives and have admirable knowledge and a broad perspective. There are also young people whose energy and optimism drive everyone forwards.

Subjects

I
nfoNet’s main subject is lifelong learning. In the century of knowledge and information technology, in the century of globalisation, in an environment of sustained conflict of interests and values, this is a subject which is necessary for everyone who wants to live actively and age more slowly.

It’s not just about professional training which is important for anyone who wants to come across as well as possible on the labour market; it’s also about sustained expansion of general education. Being able to distinguish the essential from the non-essential is the most important thing for everyone in life without exception. The greater the influx of information of all kinds and qualities, the more important it is to be able to distinguish quality from poor quality, useful from useless and above all, beneficial from detrimental. We can hardly acquire and maintain this ability by means other than long-term learning.

What else? We live in countries which attempt to implement political systems based on the principle of representative democracy. Without broad education which must be supplemented and expanded over one’s entire life, we as voters would not be able to responsibly choose the best government. We know how imperfect systems of representative democracy have been to date. Especially since many voters are not able to vote responsibly and capably due to their neglected education.

Let us face the other threats of our sick world and continue to strive to gain and share sufficient information! With InfoNet, of course.
