The order arrived between Christmas and New Year’s Day. A tersely-worded notice addressed to all the New Opportunity Centers, both private and public, confirmed the plans revealed in mid-2012 concerning the inevitable closing of the centers, which specialize in the recognition and certification of competences and the organization of adult education courses. This government decision eliminates a level from the Portuguese educational system, and leaves thousands of adults and professionals in this area adrift and without future prospects.

In June 2012, as part of the project, the Latvian National Library organised a conference in Riga on differences between non-formal and formal education. Advantages and status of non-formal education in comparison to formal education were discussed. Initiatives undertaken by different economic branches with the aim of recognising this non formal education were presented.

The field of Adult Education and training has been among the priorities of the government of the Republic of Cyprus ever since the early years of its establishment. At the moment there are several courses on offer which aim to suit diverse needs for continuous and lifelong learning and help Cypriot adults to acquire new skills that will help them in this difficult economic period. Adult Education and training in Cyprus is offered by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, the Ministry of Finance, and private providers.

In 2012 only 38% of adults in England considered themselves to be current or recent learners. There have been only marginal changes in this figure since 2001 when it stood at 46%. However since 2010 there has been a steady decline from a figure of 43%.

The decision states as follows: “Wishing to emphasise the importance of education for development and utilisation of the potential of the older generation of Poles, and in recognition of the tremendous work being done by senior citizens’ self-help organisations, the Senate of the Republic of Poland has made 2012 the Year of Universities of the Third Age ". |
