Success Formula for Life | Print |
Maria Gauci   | 10.05.2010 | National Affairs - Interviews
Success Formula for Life is one of a number of popular short courses appealing mostly to those in search of Success, Professional and Personal Growth in their Lives, offered by the Adult Education Department at the Education and Employment Ministry in Malta.
Mary Gauci who herself attended the course speaks to Mrs Sangeeta Sullivan on her magic formulas. Mrs Sullivan is an Indian national, married to George, a Maltese businessman - both residing in Malta. She is a training, human resources development and organisational development specialist and is a firm believer that an organisation is only as good as its human resources.
Mrs Sullivan, what is your secret of your positive and charismatic attitude?
Life teaches you that without a positive and engaging attitude you can never achieve success in any sphere professional or personal.
What is the main message in The Success Formula for life? And how would you link both?

After years of balancing the roles of a professional, mother, housewife, one realizes that life is all about finding the right balance, whether it be a man or woman in their professional or personal lives.
Like walking a tight rope, balance comes with confidence derived from taking one step at a time. When a gymnast tries to walk the rope the first time, one is on the verge of falling and seeks his position to stabilize his body. Eventually one is able to stand perfectly on the tightrope, one focuses on taking the first step.
All individuals want to be successful in walking this tightrope called LIFE.

What do participants think about their participation and learning?
Life is a continuous process of learning and that is why Lifelong Learning is given so much importance these days.
Most of my students become friends to me. I’m also their trained Mentor and Counsellor. I use an interactive style, more of aligning skills learnt from me to all facets of their lives. I encourage students to share their trials and problems, in their professional and personal lives, vis-à-vis the particular Module we are focussing on at that time, so they go back, with solutions found from the Theory learnt!
‘Little knowledge could be dangerous’ or ‘a threat in communication’ -how do you manage to coordinate the class when people come from so many different backgrounds?
All people whichever background creed, culture one comes from wants to achieve Success. It’s a primary motivator for all human beings.
Until success integrates into your entire wheel of life, you cannot consider yourself a successful human being.
The seven spokes of the wheel of LIFE are:

- Successful Business/Career/Studies
- Family Life
- Personal Development
- Mental Development
- Physical Development
- Spiritual Development
- Financial Success

Success is directly related to having a balanced life. If any one area is out of synchronization, all the areas of your life suffer as a consequence.
As regards, little knowledge being dangerous I try and ensure all my courses are as complete as possible.
When a tutor is knowledgeable of the subject but in addition has first hand experience - how enriching would that be to the participants?
Well, it is all the more enriching, as one is combining one’s practical experience of 'on the job' and life experiences to the actual theory, which is then meant to be applied to any job at the workplace or home or any of the spokes of the wheel mentioned above to achieve success, harmony and serenity in life.

Do you see any difference between adult education in Malta as compared to India or other countries you are familiar with?

Not really, basically adult education in Malta is improving, as it now has to be done to conform to EU standards.

What do adults want to accomplish by participating?

They all want to achieve the key factor called Success!

What do they think they gained by participating? Is it the certificate they are after? Do people really find work with the possession of the certificate?

Most importantly they feel they have achieved the vital knowledge to walk on the tight rope ‘life’. They would like to be in possession of a certificate but normally if they have various professional and personal demands, this certification might be difficult to achieve as it needs far more homework and thus the knowledge is better than nothing!

Are the adult education courses given due merit in interviews for work?

These adult education courses are continuous refresher courses and make you firstly handle the interview better to get the post. They make you a successful professional when working and handle the job better to the total satisfaction of the company you are employed with.

Why do a lot people not participate in adult learning?

It is purely because of lack of discipline and motivation, to attend these courses to refresh and gain more knowledge and thus even without degrees, they achieve success in their lives.
Moreover, these are serious topics and people have to have a focused mind and concentration when attending these courses, otherwise they are not making use of a second chance in life, that they are being given.

Conclusion: any suggestions?

Keep learning as there is no end to learning in life!
Never give up and learn with faith and determination to succeed!
Knowledge is an ocean and each module you attend, is one more achievement for being successful in life.
