The less developed settlements of Hungary may bid for infrastructure subsidies for the development of community centres. The goal is to provide facilities for community activities, training and entertainment to local inhabitants. In February 2008, the National Development Agency in Hungary invited tenders in the interest of reducing the disparity in infrastructure developments between areas and regions. The designated autonomous governments of less developed settlements may bid for subsidies for the establishment of a new type of institution named “Agora”.
Agora is a multifunctional community centre, a specifically built physical environment suited to provide the community with cultural, training, and adult education functions. The creation of this institution will assist individuals in obtaining the necessary competence for making their mark in society and the services provided will promote the development of community-and-civil activities.

The subsidy may be used for infrastructure developments, primarily to modernize and expand buildings and for the construction of new building complexes. The aim of the bidder may focus on the creation of community functions in the buildings, such as information sections, and the setting in motion of heritage-promoting, contemporary, cultural and artistic groups, the setting up of creative workshops, databases and internet portals. Agora will provide room for adult education programs, informal, atypical training, as well as theatrical performances, concerts and libraries.

The target group of this expansion is the settlement and the population under its district jurisdiction, primarily the improvement of access by socially disadvantaged groups to information, training, and cultural facilities.
The winning bidders will receive a non-refundable subsidy.
The available amount: 14,600,000,000 Forints (≈55,500,000 Euros).
