According to the Romanian Minister of Education, Daniel Funariu, 10,000 employees have been affected by the latest austerity package implemented on 1st September.

Approximately 15,000 jobs have already been cut as a consequence of an earlier austerity package. Behind the numbers hides a change in employment policies. The number of formally qualified teachers with the recognised education certifying them to teach has increased by 4,000 since 2009. Likewise, 1,700 positions remain vacant, although almost exclusively in the geographically marginalised areas.

It has mostly been teaching assistants and pensioned teachers continuing to work well after their retirement age who have lost their jobs. The number of teaching assistants has been reduced from 5,261 to 2,000 since 2009 and the number of active pensioned teachers was cut by 52%.
