On 17 March 2009, at the age of almost 70, Dr Volker Otto passed away in Leipzig. Otto was an important figure in German adult education from the 1970s to the 1990s.
His work in adult and continuing education began in 1970 when he started work at the Educational Working Centre of the German Adult Education Association (PAS), of which he was later acting Head. From 1977 to 1989 he was Association Director of the Hessian Adult Education Association, and from 1989 until his retirement in 2001 Director of the German Adult Education Association (DVV) in Bonn. In 2002 he returned to his home town of Leipzig, where in 2003 he was appointed honorary professor by the Institute for Adult Education, Social Education and Business Education and Management Training in the Faculty of Education at the University. For many years he was a member of the editorial meeting for the “Hessische Blätter für Volksbildung”, an academic journal for adult education in adult education centres. In all these functions Otto had considerable influence on the development of German adult education. |
